Raagas in my Sound (Please forgive if i'm wrong anywhere, and Please comment to correct it. Thank you)

SOUND AND MUSIC Music is an extremely subjective, aural experience. Some sounds are perceived by us as pleasant and some others as unpleasant. What is considered pleasant or unpleasant can be quite personal, based on our specific culture, exposure to particular kinds of music and perhaps even on what our parents told us. A song could be a major hit in one country and could be completely disliked and ignored in some other country. Our musical tastes are indeed developed. As we grow up, and discover music from other cultures or newer musical styles, our tastes too change. Sometimes, we even discover a pleasant piece of music purely by accident - because it simply happened to resonate with our inner sensibilities. Oh, nothing like self discovery ! So how do we make sense of sound and music ? Let us try to answer this by examining some simple concepts first. Our high school physics tells us that sound has several features - such as pitch, intensity, quality and duration. The pitch is just the frequency of the sound vibration - given in hertz or cycles. The musical term for frequency is 'tone'. The audible frequency range extends from about 25 Hz to around eight or ten thousand hertz, although it depends entirely on the individual. Children can hear much higher frequencies. At the lower end of the range, even if we may not 'hear' ultralow frequencies, we may 'feel' the vibrations as a tactile sensation. The intensity is the same as loudness and it is related to the amplitude of the sound wave. One should learn to not confuse the intensity with the frequency. For example, try to recite the nursery rhyme 'Baa baa black sheep, Have you any wool ?' When you come to the syllable 'bl' in the phrase 'black sheep' (or 'woo' in the word 'wool') you are hitting a higher 'tone' compared to 'Baa baa'. This is the effect of frequency. Now, you can either whisper this nursery rhyme or shout your guts out. In each case, you are simply changing the intensity. The other attribute of sound - duration - is self-explanatory. It is simply the time during which the specific frequency or 'tone' lasts. The term 'quality' is more difficult to understand. It is simply a signature of the source of the sound. It is a term which explains why a violin sounds like a violin and a drum sounds like a drum. This attribute is precisely the reason you can make out your mother's voice over the phone even if she has a horrible cold. The bottomline is, when you or an instrument produce sound, you not only produce one frequency, but also produce a spectrum consisting of several 'overtones'. This is variously referred to as 'timbre' or 'tone color'. This constitutes the 'Quality' of that sound. Just to explain this concept some more, let us say you try to produce a single frequency with your voice - one way to 'produce' a single frequency is to get a keyboard and keep pressing one of its keys and you hum along till you resonate. If you actually analyzed the waveform you produced, you will see not only a significant amount of the frequency you were trying to produce but also see small amounts of other frequencies - which are the overtones. The exact composition of overtones you produced is in some sense the signature of your voice and constitutes its quality. This should also set you thinking. Just how in the world do you perceive sounds ? How do you identify your friend's voice ? Clearly you are not decomposing it into frequency components (Fourier analysis). How do you sometimes make out which song it is simply by listening to a few notes ? How is it that you can mentally 'visualize' (!) someone's voice, laughter, sounds, some past conversations, songs ? Basically, when you hear sounds and music, you are simply doing a 'pattern recognition' against what you already know. Over the years, your brain has stored a certain number of 'primitives' - this list is a dynamic one and primitives are added or lost as you grow older - and you have an intrinsic capability to match a freshly heard sound impulse to the basic database. If you hear a strange sound that does not produce a match, sometimes you load it up as a primitive. An equally interesting exercise - think of five songs you really like. Can you explain why you like them or what is in common with all of them ? Can you 'explain' and define your musical taste ? Unfortunately, however much analysis one does, in terms of frequencies and so forth, it finally boils down to psychological factors when it comes to music and taste. Analysis is merely a tool to understand some of its structure. It can never explain why some musical sounds are deemed 'romantic' or 'harsh' or why some Ragam is an evening Ragam (if you believe in such things). But we found that it has been covered a couple of times by the fellow muziboons. So later on we landed on “kallayi Kadavathu”….So here we go with the final output. My dear friends,

It’s one of my long time dream comes true.Yes its true….it was my dream….i’ve recorded a couple of hindi songs (cover) before, but it was only for my ears.Due to my bad Hindi diction its all still resting in my computer hard disk……i’m very afraid to upload those.Since 2007 i was an active member in the music blogging world, visited a lots of music forums and after reaching here i got inspiration from the fellow bloggers.
I always love to listen and ofcourse love to sing hindi songs, but due to my BAAAAAAAAAAAD diction, bad means i know its realy bad, its because i’ve no idea about the language (feel shame to say that, being an Indian).It may be coz during School days our Hindi teacher was very cruel and she used to beat the children a lot and she was very strict and serious in classroom,may be coz of that,from child hood itself i hated Hindi.Even when there was option for second language (Malayalam / Hindi)in higher classes, still i remember my parents told me to go with Hindi, but I cried a lot to have Malayalam as second language just to avoid Hindi,NO!….to avoid Hindi teacher(i dont want to mention my teachers name).Later on even i argued with my friends during college days comparing Hindi and English Language, saying English is enough rather than Hindi, but, now i regret,and realise the importance of our “Rashtra Bhaasha”,our language,Hindi.
After coming to England i came to know it was a great loss not learning Hindi, not only in music even in communication.Trust me its a must. Anyways i dont want you to get bored reading my boring stories…

Here we go again……I expressed my interest in singing Hindi songs here and my dearest Babukka,our Babji, one of muziboos best mixer as well as a wonderfull singer (Babu N.M). I’m damn sure if i was singing this in front of him he wud have kicked me out because of my diction.He was so fedup with me.But Babukka, Thanks a lot for your GREAT support and your patience in this one.After it came to an “OK” extent he brought the final output with his magical work in mixing.Here i would like to thank our dearest Saroj Chechee (Saroj) as well for encouraging me to upload this song.

I know that there will be a lot of errors in this cover.Hope my dear friends will tolerate me with this.Please listen to my try and let me know……After getting your valuable comments only, i need to take a final decision, whether to continue covering Hindi songs or what????.
Hope this will not be my first and last Hindi song upload (LOL)…ha…ha….

Here again i’m trying an other song from the film Patheyam (Malayalam).Actually i forgot about this song for a long and last week I’ve seen the karoake track while visiting an other forum.One of the beautiful songs during my schooldays, Still remember my 10th std, where i sang this song for the feast…….i was standing in that stage as a boy while i was recording this now….Beautifull memories……

First of all let me thank each and everyone of you for the comments made by you for may last upload.
Back again with an other number.
As the tile says its a tribute to the great lyricst Gireesh Puthencherry, who left from us last year.I was planning to post this song on Feb 10th, on his first anniversary, but due to some reasons…….

Beginning his career with the 1988 film Chakravaalathinappuram, Gireesh went on to write lyrics for about 1556 songs in about 328 Malayalam films.His first popular hit songs were from the 1992 movie Johnny Walker. During a career spanning over two decades, he had penned many hit songs in Malayalam cinema. He was also one of the most honoured lyricists, having won the State Award seven times including four in consecutive years from 2001 to 2004. Happy Husbands, released on January 14, 2010, was his last film.
Besides writing lyrics for several hit songs, Gireesh had also written the screenplay for the films Brahmarakshassu, Pallavur Devanarayanan and Vadakkunnathan and the story for Kinnaripuzhayoram and Meleparambil Aanveedu. He was scripting a film by the name of Raman Police, in which Mohanlal was expected to play the lead role.

Dear friends,

After a short break I’m back again here.I was on holidays to India for the last couple of weeks.Had a great time.Back again to the old tensions, but still happy to spend time listening the wonderful singers here.

During my holidays we were having small funs and some songs were sung by me, brothers and sister.Then we planned to record our Amma’s song.She is 58 now.I tried to record with the karoke, but she was not at all ready,even this version we compelled her a lot.She told that it was coz of ages she havent sung nothing.At last she agreed to sing a song which she likes most. There were no recording gears,its all here with me.So we tried to manage with the basic arrangements.She even told some old college stories about this song,after she performed in the music college,Trivandrum,about the comments made by the male students and singing this song whenever they see her…ha…haa…etc;etc;… Sweet old stories….

Anyways,the song has been recorded, and now i thought of sharing the song with all my friends.Please listen to the try and let me know how it sounds for you.There are some breath issues and problem with low registers, hope there will be an excuse for her age.

This time i’m trying a tamil number with Hamsapriya.

When i was searching for the karaoke track of “Meduva meduva…” i came across Hamsapriya’s profile and was so happy to see an other beautifull singer in muziboo.I havent heard this song before,(even though the song was a hit and as most of you know that the film Dharmayudham has given one of the legend of Indian Cinema, The ROBOT of Indian cinema).Anyway, after hearing Hamsapriya’s cover, i thought of proceeding with the particular song.Actually her cover was a karoke track for male singers,first i tried with that, and was not satisfied due to some issues.I asked Priya, whether she can sing the vocals for me again.With no objection she’d done again with her beautiful voice with lovely expressions. Here I’m expressing my Thanks to Hamsapriya for sharing her great voice with me.
